It can pose itself as an undeniable fact that the whites are the race that is in majority in the United States. Where the African Americans struggle to get by each day due to the stereotypes being in the air about them and where they are considered merely thugs before actually coming to conclusion that the African American under inspection could be a clerk or even a doctor at a reputable hospital. The everyday African American does suffer from the stereotypical mind of the whites because the majority views rule. Where the African Americans consider themselves as a minority – where the whites consider them as thugs – it is comforting to see that the 44th president of the states is not white but black.
Whether the white race is in denial or probably sticking to the truth when it comes to Obama’s heritage that it is believed on the behalf of the whites that he is not in fact black but of mixed race the African Americans on the other hand are not backing up. The African Americans believe – and have voted in accordance – that Obama is in fact an African American. Another proof of this submission is the research done by the PEW research center and the results suggest that only 24% of whites believe that Obama is black whilst 53% suggest that he has a mixed race. The other side of the scale denotes that 55% of the African American community, believe Obama to be black while only 34% suggest that he has a mixed race.
Obama when speaking of the case of Trayvon Martin, a black Florida teenager shot dead by George Zimmerman, said, “There are very few African American men in this country who haven’t had the experience of being followed when they were shopping in a department store. That includes me. There are very few African American men who haven’t had the experience of walking across the street and hearing the locks click on the doors of cars. That happens to me — at least before I was a senator. There are very few African Americans who haven’t had the experience of getting on an elevator and a woman clutching her purse nervously and holding her breath until she had a chance to get off. That happens often.”
If Obama has dark skin people could mistake him for being black, is that the idea of the speech? Perhaps Obama has straightforwardly called himself an African American. Obama does not speak much about his race, but with this speech he may have referred himself as an African American.
- The Associated Press reported in April 2010: Obama did not check multiple boxes on his U.S. Census form, or choose the option that allows him to elaborate on his racial heritage. He ticked the box that says ‘Black, African Am., or Negro.’
The African American community proudly claims and votes for Obama to be a black president, and in harmony with the community of blacks of the united states it is safe to say that after decades of struggle on the part of the blacks Obama serves to be the first black president of the United States.
